Day 9: Columbia TN Tournament

Every now and then when you have been in the van together as long as we have since last Wednesday, you find ways to entertain yourselves. Unfortunately, sometimes it is at the expense of someone else. That is the case in the video below. When Cameron made the mistake of falling asleep, the guys decided it was time for him to wake up.

We made the trip from Bryson City, NC to Columbia, TN in just over five hours. We checked into our hotel and rested up for our 6:30 game. Columbia's tournament is always one of the most competitive tournaments that we play. This year the teams are divided into four pools of five. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday night.

Game 1
Tuscaloosa (AL) Post 34 - 11
Murfreesboro Diamondbacks (White) - 2

After traveling in a van for five hours and being off for three days, I was worried how we would play in our first game in Columbia. Post 34 started the 2010 Independence Day Classic with the Murfreesboro Diamondbacks. In the top of the first, the first three Post 34 reached base. Tanner Ashcraft drove in Christo Sullivan and with two outs, Sam Kelley drove in Ashcraft and Trey Williamon.
Post 34 starting pitcher allowed a run in the bottom of the first after a walk and a double but settled down to only give up one more run over 5 innings of work. Edmondson scattered 11 hits and two walks in the game that was shortened due to the eight run tournament rule.
In the second inning Post 34 put the game away with a four run inning started off with a triple by Jared Pratt. Jacob Bush grounded out to second base to score Pratt. Chase Fields doubled and with two outs Ashcraft, Cameron Carlisle, and Trey Williamon delivered back to back to back hits to put Post 34 out front 7-1.
Post 34 would add three runs in the fourth. The inning was highlighted by Cameron Carlisle's two run HR over the right field wall. Carlisle also hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to bring in Christo Sullivan who had reached with a lead off single.
Hitters for Post 34 include: Chase Fields (2-3 with a single and double); Tanner Ashcraft (4-4 with four singles); and Cameron Carlisle (2-3 with a double and HR).

Game 2
Tuscaloosa (AL) Post 34 - 7
Lindsey Dodgers (Fayetteville, AR) - 3

In 2008 and 2009, the Lindsey Dodgers from Fayetteville, Arkansas played in the Killian-Windham Tournament in Tuscaloosa but we never faced one another. Last year in Columbia, rain kept the two teams from playing one another in the Championship game. The two teams met in each team's second game of the 2010 Independence Classic.
Sam Kelley got the start for Post 34 and had his best outing of the summer thus far. Kelley retired ten of the first eleven batters he faced. The only batter that reached, struck out on a wild pitch in the dirt that got away from Post 34 catcher, Christo Sullivan. Kelley threw six innings striking out 7 and allowed 3 hits. After a lead off walk in the seventh, Blake Beck came on to get the save with a fly ball and two strikeouts.
Chase Fields led off the game with a double and Christo Sullivan followed with a walk. The Dodgers committed an error on Tanner Ashcraft's bunt that scored Fields and left Ashcraft and Sullivan at second and third. Cameron Carlisle grounded out to short stop to score Sullivan and give Post 34 a 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, Sullivan led off with a walk and moved to third on Tanner Ashcraft's double. Cameron Carlisle hit a sacrifice fly to score Sullivan. In the fourth, Post 34 would score four runs to jump out to a 7-0 lead. With two outs, Jared Pratt walked followed by consecutive hits from Fields, Sullivan, Ashcraft, and Carlisle.
Hitters for Post 34 include: Chase Fields (2-3 with a single and double) and Tanner Ashcraft (3-4 with a single and two doubles).
